Opt Out Statements: The Leave No Child Behind law gives the military access to our nation's schools along with personal records of students, i.e., unless parents sign a statement prohibiting the sharing of information about their child. InDeKalb hundreds of parents signed opt out statements provided by DeKalb Interfaith Network at the time of high school registration last fall. At our request the high school principal has included this form in orientation materials provided every parent for next fall's registration..

Counter Recruitment, Dekalb High School: Since approved by the DeKalb School Board in 1992,Interfaith Network presented a Peace Table one or more times each year to counter the influence of military recruiters seeking to meet their quotas of enlistees . We provided students with factual information regarding recruiters' promises, the realities of signing up for the military, and alternative means of securing a college education, pursuing a career, or serving one's country. This year, faced with new restrictions on our ability as an outside group to offer literature, buttons or other items to students, a student group was formed to take over the functions of the Peace Table. The students subsequently conducted a number of successful Peace Tables, unencumbered by the new restrictions. Dan Kenney serves as their Advisor. Click Here for their website

Counter Recruitment, Sycamore High School: Efforts to have a peace presence at Sycamore High School this past year has met with flat refusal of the Sycamore School Board even to debate the issue. Members of DeKalb Interfaith Network who live in Sycamore are continuing a spirited campaign to convince the Board of the importance of allowing students an alternate source of career information. Contact Peter Barick if you can help with this important effort..
